The North of England Newspaper Archive is working to create a searchable online database of local and regional newspapers for the benefit of researchers and historians (including family historians). The project is run on a not-for-profit basis by academics and community volunteers.

SomCom developed the Newspaper Management System (NMS) so that correction of scanned articles could be carried out online in a distributed, collaborative fashion. Extracted text is displayed alongside the original scan so that comparison of the two is straightforward.
